Dr Angela M. Danborno

Dr Angela M. Danborno graduated with a B.Sc. in Physiology in 1998 and proceeded for the National Youth Service Corps where she was posted to the Department of Physiology, University of Calabar for her primary assignment in 1999. In 2005 she was employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Human Physiology, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, where she eventually completed her Master’s program in Physiology in 2008. While registered as a PhD student in ABU Zaria, she was the first to be awarded the TETFUND fellowship from the Faculty of Medicine for a bench work in the University of Kansas USA in 2010. While in the USA, she worked in the laboratory of Prof. James A. Orr from July 2010 to June 2012. Her work was mostly in the area of Nerve and Muscle Physiology with a special focus on vascular smooth muscle. In May 2014 she obtained her PhD degree from ABU. Zaria and proceeded for her Postdoctoral Research at the University of Kansas from November 2014 to January 2016. While at ABU, she served as coordinator for many academic programs (B.Sc. Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacy and Nursing).
In July 2016 she moved to Bingham University Karu, where she became the Head of Department for the Department of Physiology from 2017 - 2019. As the Head of Department, she worked tirelessly and got full accreditation for the B.Sc. Physiology program for the first time. Dr Danborno has served in many committees in the University including Research and Ethics Committee, University Board of Research Committee Member and Senate Committee to Review Academic Brief and Curriculum.
Dr Angela Danborno has to her credit several awards and fellowships for her research and science communication activities. She received IBRO/DANA Brain Awareness Awards for 2020 Project, Fellowship to Attend the 4th IBRO-TReND School on Insect Neuroscience and Drosophila Neurogenetics, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, October 2016 and The University of Kansas Fellowship to attend CrawFly Summer School at Cornell University, New York, USA, June 2015. She has presented papers and posters at both international and local conferences. She is a member of various societies, including the Physiological Society of Nigeria (PSN), American Physiological Society (APS), The Physiological Society (UK), Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) and Association of Women in Science (AWIS). She is a reviewer for the Nigerian Journal of Physiological Sciences and Journal of African Association of Physiological Sciences. She and her husband Dr Danborno co-founded STEM4GirlsNigeria - a nonprofit organisation dedicated to encouraging secondary school girls and young women to choose science subjects and pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields respectively. Dr Danborno is pursuing her research interest in the physiology of vascular smooth muscle and physiological anthropology.
