Dr Abidemi J. Akindele

Dr. Abidemi James Akindele is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics & Toxicology, University of Lagos, Nigeria. His research interest is Natural Products Pharmacology & Toxicology/Drug Repurposing. He holds B.Sc. (First Class Honours) and Ph.D. Pharmacology degrees from the University of Lagos and Diploma in Research Ethics (CBR, Ibadan). He has over 70 publications in reputable national and international Journals to his credit and has been a recipient of many awards including the Fulbright Foreign Students/Junior Staff Development Award (Visiting Researcher at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, United States); CV Raman International Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (Indian Institute for Integrative Medicine, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Jammu, India) and CNPq-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (Universidade de Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto, Brazil). He has been funded by many organisations, including the Robert Bosch Stiftung Foundation. Dr. Akindele is a Fellow of the African Scientific Institute (ASI) and he was a Participating/Project Implementation Steering Committee Member of the IAP Grant for capacity building workshop for early career women academics in West Africa organised by the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA) in conjunction with other Senior and Young Academies in West Africa.


Dr. Akindele is a Core Team member of the Global State of Young Scientists (GloSYS) Africa project with funding from Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF - Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany). He is a Fellow of the NYA and Alumnus of the GYA. Dr. Akindele previously attended a training workshop on Science Communication organized by the GYA at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Halle (Saale), Germany and Science Advice for Policy Workshop organized by the IAP at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is a participant (as a Researcher) in the EUEPiN (Evidence Use in Environmental Policymaking in Nigeria) initiative funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation under the aegis of the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) in collaboration with the African Academy of Sciences (AAS). Dr. Akindele is a recipient of the Society for Medicinal Plant Research (Gesellschaft fur Arzneipflanzenforschung, GA), International Union of Pharmacology (IUPHAR), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) travel, training and research grants. He was a leading member of the core team that applied for and got the World Bank Grant for the establishment of the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science at the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
